Discuss how to minimize the problems of fatigue, boredom, or practice effects in within-subject designs

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Within-subject design uses repeated measures. For instance, the researcher wants to see the effect of noise on learning and memory. The researcher collects the sample and instead of dividing the sample in two groups, he introduces the different conditions to the whole sample, one after the other. This often leads to problems like, fatigue, boredom and practice effect. This can be evaded through counter-balancing technique.

The researcher must counter this problem by introducing the different conditions alternatively. The sample can be divided in two groups, both the groups would receive both the conditions. However, the first group can receive condition A first and then B. The second group would receive condition B and then A. This would minimize the carry-over effect and the problems of fatigue and boredom would be evaded.
