What is the relationship between population and sample? This is for CJA/335 Research Statistics.
Population is the number of people in total in a geographical area from which the sample is chosen. For instance, a researcher wants to test the effect of different teaching styles on students. He wants to test the formulated hypotheses on grade five. The total number of students in fifth grade are 200 students. The experimenter needs only 20 students. He would choose a sample from the population which would best represent it the best. A sample (any number of people) is collected from the population for the purpose of administering different teaching styles. A sample is considered to be the representation of the population. These individuals who are called samples, are assigned to different treatment groups.
