Dissociative identity disorder was earlier referred to as multiple personality disorder, where one individual consists of more than one personality, such that these would exist inside one individual. These personalities may fight with each other. This is a neurotic disorder, there is a fault in the perception if reality.
One of the examples which has been widely known is that of the patient Chris Costner Sizemore, who had also been known as Eve white. The case study is about eve white, who came to report her “severe and binding headaches” complain to the doctors. She also complained to the doctor that she has had periods of amnesia, in the form of blackouts, and that her family did not know of any such unconsciousness periods.
The significant details that CAme up were that there were periods of amnesia, which became clear under hypnosis. The periods of amnesia were identified as they were discussed by the family. The husband identify that they had a trip, which eve had no recollection of. Also, eve had sent a letter to the psychiatrists, which began in calligraphy and ended in childlike handwriting.
Some of the different personalities exhibited were eva white and Eva black. Eva White was a soft considerate woman and eve black was reckless with temper inconsistencies. The third personality, Jane, came up in the Rorschach test, where both eve black and eve white were not aware of the answers and faced periods of amnesia.
The physicians were able to access the first two personalities by hypnosis, where the Eve black and Eve white personalities were controlled very easily. In one of such experiments, where the psychiatrists were switching personalities, both obtained amnesia and periods of amnesia.
