what was unusual about Van Eyck's man in a red turban?

Answer #1

Portrait of the man in a red turban is an oil painting by Van Eyck. The unusual thing about it was that Van Eyck signed his pictures including his personal motto. Despite using oil for the painting, the level of craftsmanship that Van Eyck showed was completely unusual. He is still recognized as the “father of oil painting”. The name of the work is mistaken, because the character is not wearing a turban, but a chaperon, an accessory which was very hip at that time. The portrait has intricate details like the facial hairs, the wrinkles around the left eye, the chaperon and intense color red, fills the painting with vitality. This was very unusual despite being an oil painting.
