How would you define the difference between "sensation" and "perception"?What is meant by "top down" processing? Can you apply this concept to your own studies: are there classes/subjects in which you learn and study the material from the "bottom up" and others where it could be defined as "top down"?
On the topic of sensory adaptation: how would our experience of the world be different if we did not experience sensory adaptation? How could we view this process as one that is helpful for survival?
Color blindness: is it an issue with sensation or with perception? (or both?) Explain your answer.
As the name suggests, sensation is about sensing the environment around us. We have five senses- sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. We are constantly being bombarded with information being sensed by these five senses. The process of collecting all this information from the senses and sending it to the brain is known as – Sensation.
Perception is the interpretation of the information sent by the senses. This helps us make sense of the world around us.
For example, the eyes send the information of the distance between your car and the divider to the brain. This is sensation. The interpretation of the safe distance required to be maintained is interpreted by the brain. This interpretation is perception.
