Symbolic interactionists explore the changing meanings attached to marriage. While some cultures emphasise marriage as a duty and obligation that is necessary in order to procreate, Western cultures place more emphasis on personality of potential mates and view marriage is the salvation for true love. People expect compatibility, affection, and understanding in marriage. Marriage is viewed as an arrangement less based on obligation and duty and more on feelings of attraction and intimacy. It is perceived and socially constructed as an arrangement that one can break when feelings changed.
