Our visual system has evolved to adapt to dark and light environments, presumably to function during night and day. The pupil is directly responsible for controlling the amount of light that enters the eye, that in turn allows us to adapt to conditions of low and high intensity of brightness. The pupil opens wider (dilates) in dim light to allow more light to enter the eye and enhance vision, and closes down (constricts) in bright light to reduce the amount of light entering the eye in order to decrease stimulation.
