Suicide is the act of intentionally
causing one's own death. A number of rosk factors are associated
with it. Some are listed below:
- Psychological and mental disorders,
especially depression and other mood disorders, schizophrenia, and
social anxiety.
- Substance abuse and/or alcohol
disorders
- History of abuse or
mistreatment
- Feelings of hopelessness due to
studies
- Family history of suicide
- Impulsive or aggressive
tendencies
- Financial or social loss
- Relationship loss
- Exposure to others who have
committed suicide
If I suspect that someone is
contemplating suicide, I will try to follow following intervention
or measures:
- Talk to that person about the
challenges in his/her life. Talking to them is the best support we
can provide them to remove the feeling of hopeless and loneliness
in them.
- Do everything in your power to get
a suicidal person the help he or she needs. Call a crisis line for
advice and referrals. Encourage the person to see a mental health
professional, help locate a treatment facility, or take them to a
doctor's appointment.
- Encourage positive lifestyle
changes
- Even after the immediate suicidal
crisis has passed, stay in touch with the person, periodically
checking in or dropping by
