Psychologist David McClelland proposed the need theory which consited of 3 types: needs for achievement, power, and affiliation.

The need for achievement is based on the individual's hard effort and feedback. The need for power reflect strict discipline and winning. The need for affiliation is based on maintaining social relationship and acceptance.

Although the 3 types of needs are necessary for achieving political goals, ultimately it is the need for power and achievement that is the motivating force behind such ambition.
