English is an international language. In most of the countries it is used as official language. In the postcolonial era English has become more important. Modern education is not possible without sufficient knowledge of English. There are many reasons of popularity of the English language.

• In most of the colonized countries today English is taught as second language or even first language. There are many variations in the local language. In the countries like India, we find many regional languages. But English is used there as official language. Even people use English for communication. Along with the national language it is used. But in reality it appears that English is used more than the national language for its utility.
• It is the true fact that most of the books that are considered as world class level, are written in English. These books are not available in regional language. So, if one wants to do higher study he needs to take the help of these books. If one is weak in English he can never advance in his career.
• Today, study is greatly dependent on the use of internet and computer. With the help of internet we can get the help of many teachers and even many rare books are available there. Without English knowledge one can never get the access of these books. Higher education is impossible there. There are lectures of many reputed teachers. There are lots of ted talks and one needs to take the help of these things. So, knowledge in English is essential there.
• Research is an integral part of the higher education. Without research one can not reach at the top level. Besides, research works are discussed in the the international level. These matters are analyzed and the recognition of a research paper is also given from the international level. Naturally, people need to study in English. Without English a research paper can never be recognized in the international level.

The above factors make it clear that higher education is impossible without English. The study of literature in the regional language may be possible in the regional language. But if we want to do critical study of a regional literature we also need to study English books on literary criticism.
