Conclusions from more recent research on egocentrism suggests that
Piaget was accurate in his assessment of egocentrism in children.
most children are egocentric, but some are not.
levels of egocentrism depend on how familiar a child is with the situation.
biological factors are more influential in the development of egocentrism than Piaget believed.
Most of Piagets work and research on the development of a child came from his observations on his own children. He spoke a lot about the behaviour children exhibited when they were in the ego-centric phase. In this stage, the child believes that everything revolves around him. They are not able to view things from another person's point of view. This is a key phase in the pre-operational stage (2-7 years) where the child is not able to think logically or with reason as his cognitive abilities are not properly formed yet. However, recent research has shown that this level of egocentricism varies in the child based on the environment he has been raised in as well as the heriditary factors which play a key role.
