List gender-role stereotypes. What evidence is there to support or refute these stereotypes? What are the functions of these stereotypes? How do they affect relationships and se-xual interactions?

Some of the gender role stereotypes are:

  • Men should be obtaining higher education.
  • Primary area for women is not the workplace. It is the house,
  • For women, professional advancement is not important
  • Men should only be concentrating on outside work and housekeeping is not a part that men should be handling.
  • While decision making, the last say should be what the man says. Women are not allowed to take the final decision.
  • The complete responsibility of bringing up the children is of the women’s.

There are many evidences to refute these stereotypes. There are CO-educative schools where similar content are taught to men and women. When women get equal opportunities, they are equal to men in achieving higher goals as well. There are many cases where women have been equally successful. The most common example is the successful actresses that we see today, who are promoted on the basis of talent and provided equal opportunities.

The functions of these stereotypes are mutlitfold. One, they create segregation between the two groups and create distinct roles for individuals so that all the strata of the society would function in the most correct form. Since earlier women were less outgoing, they could bring up children in a better manner and put more focus on them. Also, there wEre lesser divorce rates.

Due to the superiority given to them men, se-sexual interactions included to be in manners that would be majorly dominated by the males and women would just have to abide by the commands and wishes of their male partners.
