You are an I/O psychologist working as an independent consultant. You have been recently contacted by the CEO of a midsize manufacturing firm located in a large metropolitan area. You meet with the CEO later that day to find out he is very concerned about his company becoming unionized. When he pulled into the executive parking lot today, he noticed several employees congregating in the employee lot before work. He sent his assistant out into the employee lot to find out what was going on. The assistant came back with a flyer from a local union that he found on the ground. This union has organized several of the company's competitors in the area and nationwide. The assistant wasn't able to find any employee willing to talk to him to find out what spurred this interest in unionization. All employees denied that they were discussing the formation of a union. Modern labor unions in the United States can trace their origins to the 19th century and started gaining footholds in many major corporations almost a century ago. For example, Boeing signed its first contract with a labor union in 1936, and Ford signed its first labor contract in 1941. Today, unions at those and many other “old-line” businesses still weld signifi- cant power and represent thousands of workers.
