On July 12, 2012 the show The Moment of Truth aired and opened up to five people. Among the group, there was Beto (the host), Ruth, her mother and father, and lastly her boyfriend Bryan. The Premise of the show was to pay a contestant to tell his/her dirty truth for the quest of money. July 12 it was Ruths adventure and her truths were worth more then her life on earth to her. Her back story was very uneventful, leading the producers to write her off Until her interview. During the interview she was hooked up to a polygraph and asked random questions for the polygraph reader to gain a base line. This base line was used to check against during the show to tell if ruth was telling the truth or not. Fortunately for the show the had found a man who knew ruth and her family very well. The man was the key to making a good show out of Ruth which leads to her downfall.

Ruth and her mayfly came from nothing and never really moved up in social class. “She and her siblings were born in the province of Huancavelica, hundreds of miles from Lima, but had been raised on the outskirts of the capital in a working-class area called Huachipa”. When her family moved to lima they were trying to survive by selling watermelons and pineapples. When Ruth and her sister would go to school the two would be build for speaking Quechua, Perus indigenous language. Ruth obviously has had a rough life from the start and as we see through the story she never stopped chasing her dreams, becoming a hair stylus and owning her-own shop. The show as she saw it was her chance, her ticket out; little did she know the ticket was for the wrong bus.

Ruth thought she was going to be asked the same questions as before when they were hooking her up to the polygraph. But the producers of the show had changed out the questions after finding more information then she wanted people to know. She was asked questions on live television to relive things such as, “that she’d had a nose job, that she didn’t like her body, that she wished she were white, that she was only with her boyfriend until someone better came along, that she was ashamed of her parents’ manners, that she didn’t work at a call center, that she danced at a nightclub”. If that wasn’t enough embarrassment for one night the last question was, “Have you ever accepted money for sex?”. The dirty truth was that she did have sex for money and while together with Bryan. Not only has she ruined her reputation but also her family and boyfriends. That night she made about ten months wages for the area but what she had to do for it, it should have been much more. Not only did she live through these poor situations she then confessed them to the entire country in an attempt to find her way out of the life shed been living.

While Ruth had found what she was looking for her boyfriend Bryan did not. As for him he was belittled down to nothing, as the culture in Peru all a man has is his reputation and his word. That night during the show he had lost it all while watching Ruth gain it all. It infuriated him so much he goes on to murder her and through her in a well. I don’t believe that she deserved it and I think that there should have been action taken against the tv show not us the murdereres. The television knew what there were doing and even knew as the events were unfolding that what they were doing was not the right thing to do. They still did it and didn’t even offer to help look for her or help the family out in there time of need. The show was set up to put down others for personal gain and it worked tremendously well. It put Ruth down so much in fact it was 6 feet. Beto and the crew need to be in jail as accomplices and Bryan and his uncle should both be killed. The one opportunity poor ruth had and she took it, for what? Just to be killed? I don’t think that she ever intended to hurt anyone and she even said before the questioning began that family meant everything to her and it was obvious when she is willing to sell her body to help her family survive. Bryan was humblest and there should have been some middle ground, maybe as in sharing a portion of the winning but that would have to be a talk between Ruth and Bryan.

Ruth got caught up in the idea of free money and failed to realize the risk of humiliation. I wish we could see what could have happened and if we could have really go to see if the money could have helped her go through with her dreams or if her reputation was to far down the drain. Bryan ended that chance of the viewers getting to see that and ended the dreams. Bryan and his uncle rot in cages and the show goes on hopefully one day they realize what they are doing and try and make some amends for what they have done. Rip Ruth Thalía Sayas Sánchez
