There is a negative correlation between the row that a student sits in in a large class (when the rows are numbered from front to back) and his/her final grade in the class. Do you think this represents a causal relationship or a spurious relationship, and why?

Answer #1

By the scientific approach, we cannot find any valid and reliable co-relation between numbered rows and grades of students.

Coincidently, we can get some relation, but the co-relation do not suggest any thing or idea, it just show the Grades which student get and the digit of the row where student sit.

So finally we can urge that above statement shows a casual co-relation between Grades and rows.

Reason- When we measure the co-relation between numbered rows and grades, sometimes we can find the same grade with the same number of row so that some students can suggest the probability but it doesn’t mean that numbered rows related with grades. On the other hand we can get a positive co-relation between proper study and grades.

Johnny, a ten-year-old child, normally sits in the back row of the classroom. However, his teacher noticed that Johnny seems to have trouble seeing the chalk board from that distance. There are no gross abnormalities noticeable when looking at Johnny's eyes. Johnny's parent makes an appointment to visit the optometrist. What do you think is the most likely diagnosis for Johnny? Which specific correction would you expect the optometrist to recommend?

Annabelle is a student at U of A. She is interested in the relationship between agreeableness and job performance for salespeople. She collects data and finds a statistically significant correlation between the two variables, r = -0.36, r2 = 0.13. Please explain her findings. Can you make a conclusion about the causal relationship between the two variables?

A student preparing for a career as a nurse was working part time in the office of a proctologist. She told this tale to her class in Medical Ethics. She was instructed by the office manager to clean the instruments used between services being performed by the physician. She was told to place them in a device and to set it on "RINSE". When she asked why not set the device to "STERILIZE" she was told that it takes too...

Jane has her blood type O (Rh negative). Mary, her friend, who is a student of A&P class, has developed a pernicious anemia after a partial gastrectomy. Jane wants to donate her blood for Mary, but Mary turned it down. Mary thinks it is not safe for her because she learns that there are antibodies A and B in Jane blood and antigen A in her blood. She claims that the antibody A in Jane’s blood will react to antigen...

Student grades in a sufficiently large class tend to follow a normal distribution. Suppose the final exam of a class follows a normal distribution with a mean of 75 and a standard deviation of 7.5. Select a score of 95 and specify its z-score based on this distribution. When calculating the z-score, include the steps leading to the workings. That way, any mistakes can be quickly seen and corrected. Use the chosen raw score (95) and the calculated z-score to...

Suppose researchers want to know the effect of elementary school class size on students’ math scores(total score is 100), intuitively they think there exists a negative linear relationship between class size and students’ math scores. The researchers want to know the marginal effect of class size on student’s math scores. Suppose you can construct a sample that includes 4 second grade students in different elementary schools. Data have been collected on each students’ name, gender, class size( total number of...
