One of the most challenging ethical issues you could face as a
mental health counselor involves professional boundaries. If your
professional role conflicts with your social, sexual, religious, or
business relationships, you could find yourself in a dual
relationship in two or more roles. A dual relationship can damage
your counseling relationship.
A second ethical dilemma is, accepting a gift from a client. As
therapists, we are taught to keep certain boundaries with our
clients. I would have to look at why they are wanting to give a
gift. Is it because they “want me to like them?”. Perhaps they give
a small gift to professionals during the holidays? Or as a thank
you gift when we are ending our therapy? In addition, we must also
consider cultural differences. I could offend someone because it is
perfectly acceptable in their culture to give a gift.
