A new drug has been developed that claims to prevent seasickness completely! Design an experiment that would determine how effective it is.

Do you need to define any terms for your experiment (operationally define)? If so, define them here.

What is your independent variable?

What is your dependent variable?

Who are your subjects/participants?

How will you select and assign your subjects/participants to a group?

What treatment will the experimental group be given?

What treatment will the control group be given?

What controls will you use in your experiment? Be sure to avoid experimenter bias!

Is there anything you think you should control for, but aren’t sure how?

What purpose would this line of research serve (and which subgroup do you think this experiment would most closely relate with)?

Do you need to define any terms for your experiment (operationally define)? If so, define them here.

Sea Sickness: The measurement that is obtained from the tool which the researcher is going to use to measure sea sickness.

What is your independent variable?

The independent variable is the new drug, as we aim to see the effect of this new drug on sea sickness.

What is your dependent variable?

The dependent variable is amount of sea sickness which the participants experience, as measured on the scale or tool which is used to measure sea sickness.

Who are your subjects/participants?

The participants would be people who experience sea sickness.

How will you select and assign your subjects/participants to a group?

Subjects who have sea sickness would be assigned to the experimental group and the control groups through the simple random sampling method.

What treatment will the experimental group be given?

The treatment group will be administered the new drug.

What treatment will the control group be given?

The control group will be given placebo.

What controls will you use in your experiment? Be sure to avoid experimenter bias!

The double blind procedure will used to counter experimenter bias. In this, the participants, nor the experimenter will know which is the control group and which is the experimental group.

Is there anything you think you should control for, but aren’t sure how?

The placebo effect could play a major role, as the participants may believe that the placebo may help them with the sea sickness.

What purpose would this line of research serve (and which subgroup do you think this experiment would most closely relate with)?

The research would help people to not experience the unpleasant effects of sea sickness. It will be most helpful to people who work in navy and ships.

An experiment was done to test the effectiveness of a drug that is being considered for possible use in the treatment of people who experience chronic anxiety. Fifty people who are chronically anxious are identified through a local health clinic. Twenty-five people are randomly assigned to the experimental group, and they receive the new drug for six weeks. The other 25 people are randomly assigned to the control group, and they receive the commonly used drug for six weeks. After...

Subject bias can occur in an experiment when the participants are aware of the purpose of the study and respond in a way that they think the researchers want. For example, if participants believe they are in a study to test if coffee improves your mood, those who drank coffee might claim to be happier than they really are. Based on the information given, which of the following experiments is most likely to have the issue of a control or...
