Something that caught my eye that I was not previously aware of was that the "Mexican Modern Art Movement" was not only based on Mexican sources, in terms of technique. The art has been influenced by European and Indian sources as well. The Spanish invasion caused the integration of the Indian's natural talent in the visual arts with European technique. I was surprised to find out that 80% of Mexicans are Indians which have influenced Mexican murals today.

We can relate this article back to our previous assignment "On the Signification of Walls." Murals are paintings that are directly put onto a wall. Diego Rivera was able to tell a story with his murals. For example, in one of the images provided, The Sugar Refiners, we can see men hard at work mixing and pouring sugar and we can imagine what a day at work was like for them. I think this is significant because what could have been lost in writing or for those who can't read, one can imagine and come up with a story based on the murals of Mexican history.

To some extent, the statement about Mexican modern Art makes some truth claims about the structural aspects of the genre of Mexican art as that which have been shaped by the indigenous themes of religious rituals, everyday familial, and the market scenes but have been equally enriched by the stylistic techniques of Europe owing to the Spanish colonial influence. Mural art is a defining feature of Mexican art today with its two dimensional figures and vibrant colours.The Mexican murals of artists such as Diego Rivera gave new light to the Mexican genre of paintings combining the indigenous sensibilities with the Spanish artistic methods, thereby rendering a composite nature to the Mexican art in the contemporary.
