Environmental variable is also known as external variable. External variables are variables which cause an effect on the dependent variable. In an experimental research, the researcher wants to see the effect of independent variable on the dependent variable solely. An effect of external variable on the experiment reduces the validity of the test. Level of illumination or light can function as an environmental variable in an experiment. For instance, one room has direct sunlight coming in and the other is relatively dingy, sunlight and level of illumination can function as an external variable.
