In the past, everyday survival challenges required physical strength and speed, such as the stress of hunting for food, or, defending oneself from attack. Most stressful situations today do not. Today's survival challenges of being in traffic jams, meeting deadlines at work, maintaining competency, juggling multiple family schedules, or, dealing with illness place us at risk if we simply allow autonomic nervous system stress reactions to run amok.
