Book: The Story of Psychology
Discussion/ Questions: Gestalt Psychology is an odd little area of psychology that was only really studied for a short time. In modern day, it is probably used most within advertising. But it is really fun to think about. Can you think of some ways you’ve experienced Gestalt in everyday life? How did your experience apply to the concepts from the chapter?
Gestalt principles are experienced in everyday life. For instance, paintings frequently employ monocular cues and figure-ground distinction to portray depth in the painting. I can perceive distance in the painting even though it is a two-dimensional image. This principle can be observed while watching movies as well. Similarly, I have often witnessed the law of proximity in use while observing huge crowds. Based on their spatial distance, I tend to categorize individuals into distinct groups. Another instance of Gestant principles I have experienced is the law of continuity. When I am listening to music in a very noisy setting, I perceive it as a part of the same song despite external interruptions.
