The political ideas and policies of the political theorists of the Enlightenment brought about the French Revolution. The collapse of the old regime was the result of factors such as; economic problems, social unrest, conflicting ambitions individuals and groups. The French Revolution went through a series of phases; unlike the English and American Revolutions, each of phases of the French revolution amounted to a new wave of revolution as the Revolutionists repudiated one policy to adopt another i.e. the antithesis, this led to turning from one philosopher of the Enlightenment to an alternative. For example, the first phase of the French Revolution was the dominated by the ideas of Montesquieu
