What are the purposes of a literature review?

While undertaking a research, reviewing the literature in relation to the research problem being investigated is a primary, critical and tedious task. Review of literature consists of a survey of books, scholarly articles, conference proceedings and any other sources relevant to the area of research. Reading the literature one should identify the theory used, summarise, and critically evaluate the works in relation to the research problem being investigated. The purpose of a literature review is to establish a theoretical framework for the topic under investigation, identifies the methods used by earlier studies, define key terms, definitions, and terminology so that a comprehensive understanding of the topic is developed.
