The basic the most important difference between reinforcer and punisher is that reinforcer increases the directed behavior while punisher decreases the directed behavior through aversive consequences. For example, for doing homework on time, John is given a chocolate. Here, chocolate as a reinforcer is intended to increase a behavior.

For not completing the homework, John was scolded at by the teacher. Here, scolding as a punishment is intended to decrease the behavior.
