Is the functionalist theory macro-level or micro-level?
The functionalist theory is a macro level theory. Emile Durkheim was one of the chief proponents of this theory. The functionalist theory focuses on the macro level of the society, instead of the micro level. The functionalist theory looks at the society as a whole, and how every component of the society contributes to the making of a larger society. Functionalism states that our society is made of of various social institutes which make and shape the society. This institutions are dependent on each other and function as a whole.
To understand how this practically works in the society, we can see that the government provides for the safety of family, providing medical and heath benefits, protecting from social evils, and educating the children. On the other hand these families may work for the government or other jobs and help the state make money. Also, these citizens follow the rules and regulations laid down by the government and pay the taxes.
