A heuristic approach involves taking mental shortcuts that ease the cognitive load of making a decision. Examples of this method include using a rule of thumb, an educated guess, an intuitive judgment, guesstimate, stereotyping, profiling, or common sense. Since this approach does not follow an exact rule-based methodology, the chances of cognitive biases increase. Heuristic approach can be operationalised as the results obtained from psychometric assessments, such as the Heuristics and Biases Scale.
