Membership in an ethnic group for some individuals is the factor that develops their identity.The main reasons why this is important for certain are as follows:

• This gives them a sense of belonging.
• Some individuals think that it is more important to be a member of an ethnic group because of the influence that their ethnicity had on them when they were growing up. If a person had a strong connection with their ethnic group and participated in the customs, they are more likely to hold on to that identity.
• A person from within one’s own ethnic group can have strong opinions and make it difficult to remove themselves from a group.
• Membership within an ethnic group can also give people a sense of security and belonging.
