Champion of the World, Angelou. Explain why the community responded so positively to Joe Louis' success in the boxing world. What does this selection say about pride in one's race and heritage?
During those times the black community to which Joe Louis belonged faced huge discrimination along with severe segregation. So,the victory of Joe Louis' was celebrated as the victory of the black community, that they are not inferior and are as good as any other community of this world. The other reason for celebrating the success of Joe was that, until Joe's victory, winning a heavy weight boxing championship was considered exclusively for the white community and blacks were considered far inferior for this championship. Hence, this winning by Joe broke that belief of the majority race, so the community to which Joe belonged responded positively to his success. Pride in one's race and heritage is appreciation of one's racial and cultural identity. It means that considering one's racial identity and heritage at par with any other race of this world and considering oneself to be equal with other races. It's an act of accepting one's racial identity and heritage.
