Counsellors have an ethical responsibility to take every reasonable precaution to respect and to safeguard their clients’ right to confidentiality, and to protect from inappropriate disclosure, any information generated within the counselling relationship.Confidentiality should be discussed with the client prior to begining counselling and discuss the limits throughout the counselling process as required.

When a client begins visiting a counselor,he/she needs help to cope up with changes or life problems or a mental health condition may already feel enough stressed without expressing the problem with the stranger and may also feel embarassed.It ts essential to build a trustworthy relation between client and the therapist.So confidentiality is needed.

Confidentiality can be broken in following situations:-

•There is an imminent danger to an identifiable third party or to self;

•When a counsellor has reasonable cause to suspect abuse or neglect of a child;

•When a disclosure is ordered by a court;

•When a client requests disclosure, or

•When a client files a complaint or claims professional liability by the counsellor in a lawsuit.
