Is Hirschi's (1969) social control theory compatible with Gottfredson and Hirschi's (1990) general theory of crime? Why or why not?

Answer #1

Social Control Theory is not compatible with General Theory of Crime because Hirschi's Social Control Theory suggests that in the absence of social constraints, crimes increase. So according to this theory, there should be strong laws that deter crimes and the laws should be enforced strictly.

Gottfredson and Hirschi's (1990) general theory of crime suggests that lack of individual self-control is the cause of crime in the society, thus giving more importance to individual discipline than the society's responsibility.
