Here is the case study :
Henry is a counsellor and operates an outpatient substance abuse counselling program located in a small, isolated but tightly-knit community in Canada. Most of the clients in the program do not have health insurance for counselling. Mr. P has recently been referred to the program for his crack cocaine addiction problem. During the intake session, Henry ascertains that although Mr. P will benefit from the program, he is unable to pay for it. Mr. P. offers to provide general maintenance and office duties such as clearing snow in the driveway, filing and so on, in exchange for counselling services by Henry.
Here is the question that has four parts that must be answered according to CCPA,2015 attached is the link: nadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. (2015). Standards of practice. (5th ed.). For this case scenario, you are to:
1. present both sides of the bartering argument (for bartering and against bartering)
2. choose an ethical decision-making model - define the model
3. explain your rationale for choosing this model to address the ethical dilemma
4. than explain if you are for or against bartering and what is the most appropriate action.
1. Present both sides of the bartering argument (for bartering and against bartering)
Mr. Henry’s job is to help people with addictions and he is paid by the insurance companies. In the case of Mr.P, he hasn’t got an insurance just like many people in the town. So Mr. P, offers some personal service in return to the treatment. Mr. Henry can very well accept the offer as it will benefit Mr.P and Mr. Henry in the form of the service Mr.P will be offering. Counselling profession is very noble one and it aims at providing service to people who are really in need of it.
On the other hand, if Mr. Henry accepts the offer, he may need to bear the expenses for the medicines and many other people may offer the same thing and he will be under trouble as he won’t be able to earn any money.
2. Choose an ethical decision-making model - define the model
I have chosen Utilitarian approach to make my decision. This model proposes that one should take action having the outcome of the action in mind and at the end it’s about the greatest benefit to greatest number taking the individual benefit into account as well. It also suggests that there should be least amount of harm to people involved.
3. Explain your rationale for choosing this model to address the ethical dilemma
Whatever happens, at the end of the day everyone involve should benefit out of any activity that was carried out. So, utilitarian approach will force the counsellor to act in favour of Mr.P, so that both will get benefitted out of the programme because Mr. Henry will save money on other services that will cover the expenses on medicine.
4. Explain if you are for or against bartering and what is the most appropriate action?
I am for the bartering system as it is one of the oldest system on the earth where people offered products and services in place of the same. So when I don’t have something equal, I’ll make some other offer that would equal my demand. Resources are limited so sharing the resources between people in bartering system will benefit everyone involved.
