1. Draw a chart that defines “need- pleasure” and “pleasure of appreciation” and lists at least three comparisons between them (10-13).

2. Explain how need-pleasure is like need-love, and pleasures of appreciation are like gift-love, using the terms “interested” and “disinterested” (14-16).

3. Lewis concludes that there is a “third element” in love in addition to need and gift-love: Appreciative love (16). Define this kind of love. Lewis gives two examples (love of God and of a woman, p. 17) in which all three elements are shown to be parts of a larger whole. Analyze two examples of your own in a similar way.

Answer #1
  • 3.Lewis continued his examination by exploring the nature of pleasure, distinguishing Need-pleasures (such as water for the thirsty) from Pleasures of Appreciation, such as the love of nature. From the latter, he developed what he called "a third element in love;Appreciative love", to go along with Need-love and Gift-love.
  • Lewis explains this much fuller sense of love in four categories: affection, friendship, Eros, and charity.
  • He begins by categorising three main kinds of Love: a ‘need-love’, characterised by dependency, which he at first thought was a ‘bad’ thing but quickly realised that, like the love of a child, it wasn’t that simple; a ‘gift-love’, which is the classic Love flowing outwards to someone or something, filling another’s need in most cases; and a third kind, appreciative love, which appears to be separate.
  • Storge is an affection, a liking someone or something -a fondness, a familiarity, such as we might feel for family members or people who relate to us in familiar ways. One of the clearest examples is the natural love and affection of a parent for their child (or a child for their parent).
  • Storge is natural, emotional, and widely diffused of loves, there is no force associated with it. The feeling is one of warmth, comfort; it doesn’t place an emphasis on another’s qualities or features, but there closeness and familiarity. It’s able to transcend discrimination, to overcome prejudice.
  • Lewis says that, though it is dependency-based, affection includes both need-love and gift-love. He considered it responsible for most lasting human happiness.
  • Example might the love my parents have towards me and also the love and care I show to my younger siblings which definitely creates a close family bond.We all accept and appreciate our family regardless of anything,we all stand for each other and be there for each other, thats true appreciation.
  • Philia is what we call friendship, the love between friends as close as siblings in strength. Friendship is the bond existing between people who share common interests, values, or activities.
  • Example might be the comradeship shared between me and my friends who have similar taste in books or films and thats how the fondness or liking develops for the other person when you bond on something.
  • Eros is the classic concept of ‘being in love’ with another.Lewis explains it as the difference between 'wanting a woman' and wanting one particular woman. Man, for Lewis, was both an animal and a reasoning creature and so Eros was a way of turning the lust of Venus into an appreciative love.
  • Charity is intellectual love, the love that operates regardless of change. Lewis recognizes this as the greatest of all, and sees it as a specifically Christian virtue.
