In the TED talk, Adam Atler, a psychologist, studies the effect screen time has on us and how they are able to get us to become so attached to these devices. What he concluded was that there is no stopping cue for social media now. Back then, a stopping cue would be when one completes reading the newspaper. However, now all of the news just keep going down--there is no end to it. When there isn't anything new for that app anymore, there are other apps that would occupy a lot of time doing the same things. He believes that we are spending too much time on things that upset us rather than using that time on memorable moments that we will actually cherish.
Personally, I spend most of my day watching the screen by watching Netflix, Youtube, and interacting with people through social media. I honestly feel like I could be spending this time more wisely but there are aspects of it that I would not consider it to be a waste. I am able to play games with friends that do not go to Stony Brook with me and video chat loved ones at home. It is a great way for me to keep in touch with many people that I am unable to reach in person.
Almost everyone around the world has acknowledged the impact of
technology and social networking media on people, especially
youngsters. The benefits of technology is incredible but if it is
in the wrong hands, for example, if it is in the hands of an
adolescent who has a hard time to decide what’s best for them would
use it for unnecessary purposes or without any purpose. This would
force them to spend more time on the internet and social networking
media thus moving away from their essentials and the important
things that they should be pursuing such as education, career,
working to time etc. Spending more time on the social networking
media and gadgets makes people tired thus they also develop a habit
postponing what they should be doing vigorously. It’s time people
use technology wisely for the development of themselves and not for
their downfall.
