What problems might an elder refugee face if she does not have English-language proficiency or economic stability in a new country?

Answer #1

Financial instability is most likely to lead to a life of poverty. Moreover, the fact that the refugee does not speak English fluently might cause her to face discrimination from the citizens of the new country. Refugees are almost always viewed as unwanted visitors rather than people in need. This is why the discrimination and deprivation that they face is a lot more severe.

There is also a psychological impact that the person in question might face from the experience. Keeping in mind that this person is elderly, she might suffer from depression and anxiety on moving to a new country, if she didn't suffer from it already. the inability to communicate and be understood by a large section of the people that she comes in contact with would further worse how she feels and could make her feel more isolated.
