social conflict of Antonio in Merchant of Venice Act 1. please explain in detail.?
The social conflict that Antonio suffers through the brevity of the play is the one of a paradoxical nature.
He is shown to have all the materialistic joys in the world, but the inner emotional turmoil yet dogs him, and doesn't let him have the peace that he reaps through his material possessions. He is shown to be quiet, as a consequence, for he is but melancholic.
He tries to satiate the inner mess by helping others. The conflict persists till the end of the play.
