The spirit catches you and you fall down is all about the lack of communication between the doctor and the patient due to cultural differences. The author’s introduced the Lee home as an eye-opener, not only for her but for her readers as well. The message being conveyed is that; people of a different culture, are still human beings with feelings and dreams and they need to be treated as such. It was not difficult for the author to realize that Lia belonged to her parents and that the doctors need to find time to understand the Hmong culture to deal with the patient.
