What do you think Jim thinks of Olaf? Do you suppose he realizes the effect he has on him? How do you explain Jim’s last comment?
In the short story "Big Black Goodman" by Richard Wright ,Olaf is anguished by his prejudice against the black sailor Jim. Jim however, is suspicious of this impact he has on Olaf. Throughout the story Jim could not figure out the hatredness of Olaf towards him, he was very generous, kind and sympathetic towards him. It's in the climax that Jims understood Olaf's prejudice towards him ,when Olaf confesses that he thought Jim was going to strangle him to death.
Its here that Jim comments "Daddy O- drop dead" which may mean that Jim too was not different from any other prejudiced person and finally Jim was able to make him confess of his prejudice towards him that he may have suspected from the Olaf's behavior.
