Culture and religion are powerful determinants of an individual’s sexuality. Cultural norms and religious prohibitions delineanate the boundary of choice of partner as well as the type of sexual practices for the members irrespective of their gender and also determine the age and stage of life at which sex is permissible. Therefore, religious groups place a direct control on the members’ sexual life in terms of proscriptions and prohibitions. Thus for instance, Semitic religions like Judaism, Catholic Christianity and Islam prohibit premarital sex, same sex intercourse, BDSM practices etc. Individuals who strongly identify with their religious group by and large tend to conform to the norms of their religious group and therefore develop their sexuality on lines of the prescribed norms of what is considered reforest appears that sexuality rather than being merely a personal experience, is a highly cultural and Social phenonmena.
