Are the “synaptic tagging” and “dendritic protein synthesis” hypotheses mutually exclusive? Why or why not?
Both of these hypothesis cannot be referred to as being mutually exclusive, and both of these theories work in a concerted manner. The synaptic tagging hypothesis explains the manner in which a particular synapse would be creating a target for the PRP ( plasticity related product). This model is a model that says that some of the dendritic proteins would be synthesised inside the dendrite, that is near the synaptic site. Both the mechanisms act as molecular basis for the protein synthesis in the dendrites that are activity dependent. Both of these hypothesis solve the problem of specificity in the dendrites. Both of these hypothesis serve as the molecular basis for synaptic plasticity.
