Describe the difference between altruism and mutualism (mutual benefits). Include in this which of the two is more a “challenge” to explain evolutionarily.
Mutualism refers to the relationship between two different organisms whereby each organism benefits from the activity of the other. Mutualistic arrangements are most likely to develop between organisms with widely different living requirements. On the other hand, altruism refers to behaviour by an organism that benefits another organism at a personal cost. Among the two, altruism is harder to explain from an evolutionary perspective because it decreases the fitness of the actor.
