Many elderly people will succumb to coma-like states in their final years as they decline into neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. Can society afford long-term care for millions of such people?
I think that society can definitely afford care for elderly people, however it depends on whether or not it is prioritised. Currently, the provision of services for the elderly is run by private institutions that are extremely cost-intensive. However, if these services are offered by organisations with government support, it would perhaps reduce the associated costs. It is also worthwhile for governments to develop policies that would encourage and incentivise family members to take care of the elderly themselves.
