What is the difference between effective praise and ineffective praise? How does this relate to performance-based assessment?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ineffective praises are general praises which are addressed to a group, and are general in nature. Also, it does not take in consideration the performance of a student. For example, Good job, students or good work girls.

Effective praise, on the other hand, is directed towards the individual, and it is very specific in nature as to the reason why the student is being praised. For example - I appreciate your arithmetic skills, well done, or your English grammar is improving a lot.

In performance assessment, feedback is very important, as it helps in improving performance, increasing morale and reduce anxiety among students. Some of the characteristics of positive feedback are:

  • The praise must be specific and clear. It must state exactly for what and why the student is being praised.
  • It must be directed to an individual, and it should be done in a straight forward manner.
