Liberation Goals and Teaching Composition
The crux of Rhetoric and Composition and intellectual work remains as an identity struggle between Writing Studies, the presumable theoretical (intellectual) work on writing and Composition Studies, the theory-to-praxis, academic work (teaching). In composition studies, particularly in first-year writing classes, “intellectual work” is challenged with contingents such as institutional assessments of quality based upon student evaluations, which are often charged by students’ emotional, rather than academic, connections to course content. As a “teaching subject,” the intellectual product is quantifiable evidence of learning; therefore, the commitment to help students (freshmen) think about literacy as more than preparation for capitalistic ventures. The pedagogy is not centered as intellectual work; rather, it is marginalized as “service,” as often teaching is perceived. Course content can range in topics that accentuate writing genres to meet various writing goals. However, scholar-teachers that venture to take on social ideology and social justice work in composition courses, do so with risks. Even though, there are frameworks in the field for in teaching matters of ideology, identity and freedom.
Writing has different purposes such
as academic writing, scientific writing, political writing, writing
for pleasure etc. In academic set-up, when writing tasks are given,
they are assessed based into their emotional content rather than
their intellectual content. In order for the writing to be
effective, students should be exposed to various genres of writing,
so that it would help them out forth their points both emotionally
and intellectually in order to make the write-up more
critical.
The students should be able to freely think about it and write
about it by providing what they think about that topic and how they
feel about that topic. So, applying this holistic approach will
improve the composition or essay writing by taking the students
from the traditional way of writing.
