In what ways can formal writing inform the way we write informally? Does knowledge of formal writing help us with informal writing? Why, or why not?
Much of our learning takes place through our interactions with others, and today the use of technology has become an indispensable tool for communication. Our generation tend to use social media and text messaging frequently for communicating with each other, and the language used in these platforms is far from formal. In this sense, we are constantly exposed to this dominant style of writing, and lack sufficient exposure to more formal styles which maybe only restricted to official and educational settings. It is important to gain skills for writing formally as well, so that we are able to use both styles when appropriate. I believe that when one learns to write formally, informal writing becomes an easier task, but the reverse does not hold true. This is becaus informal writing is a derivation of the formal style of writing.
