three major psychological theories explaining the physical, cognitive and emotional domains. in adolecent development
a) Child development theory
This explainf the physical changes and growth experienced by a child from 12 to 19 years of age. They undergo puberty which is characterized by the development of primary and secondary sexual characteristics. This happens due to various chemical and hormonal changes within them. Sexual maturation happens around this time. Sudden growth spurt like increase in height and changes in body composition happens during this period
b) Cognitive Developmental Theory
This theory was put forth by Jean Piaget. He explained four stages of cognitive development. Adolescence is characterized by formal operational stage. They develop the ability to think in abstract concepts. Complex cognitive skills like logical thinking, reasoning, reasoning and planning emerge in this stage. They come out of a box and may think differently from their parents. they reason out everything before making decisions.
c) Erik Erikson's stages of Socio-emotional Development
In Erikson's theory, the adolescents go through an identity formation v/s role confusion stage. The adolescent starts questioning themselves. They become emotionally vulnerable due to the hormonal changes. They will start developing romantic relationships and experience complex emotions of love, heartbreak etc. They are desperate to form an identity of their own and may come across as rebellious. When they successfully pass through this stage they have their identity properly formed. Otherwise, they go into a state of identity moratorium. They will become more confused as people would treat them as an adult and a child inconsistently.
