Piaget's theory of cognitive development explains the child's mental development in each stage of development. The 4 stages are -

  • Sensorimotor stage - from birth to age 2, children make sense of the world around them, transition to next stage happens when object permanence develops.
  • Pre-operational stage - from age 2 to age 7, children are still egocentric in their thinking and lack conservation skills.Learning is through pretend play. They also learn to think internally.
  • Concrete operational stage - from age 7 to age 11, children develop conservation skills, seriation and beginning of logical thinking.
  • Formal operational stage- age 11+ , adolescence- development of abstract thinking and advanced reasoning and logic
