Freud in order to deal with conflict and problems in life, stated that the ego employs a range of defense mechanisms. These defense mechanisms operate at an unconscious level and help ward off unpleasant feelings or make good things feel better for the individual.

Repression | It is an unconscious mechanism to keep disturbing or threatening thoughts from becoming conscious |
Denial | It involves blocking external events from awareness. |
Projection | This involves indiviuals attributing their own unacceptable thoughts, feeling towards other indiviuals. |
Displacement | Satisfying an impluse with a substitute object. |
Regression | This occurs back in psychological times when one faces stress. |
Sublimation | Satisfying an impluse with a substitute object in socially acceptable way. |
