Freud in order to deal with conflict and problems in life, stated that the ego employs a range of defense mechanisms. These defense mechanisms operate at an unconscious level and help ward off unpleasant feelings or make good things feel better for the individual.

Defense mechanism Description
Repression It is an unconscious mechanism to keep disturbing or threatening thoughts from becoming conscious
Denial It involves blocking external events from awareness.
Projection This involves indiviuals attributing their own unacceptable thoughts, feeling towards other indiviuals.
Displacement Satisfying an impluse with a substitute object.
Regression This occurs back in psychological times when one faces stress.
Sublimation Satisfying an impluse with a substitute object in socially acceptable way.
