The USA Freedom Act is one of the most recent pieces of legislation that guides the response to terrorism since the PATRIOT Act. Do you believe that the USA Freedom Act has protected your civil liberties or has it hindered them? Explain your response.
The USA Freedom Act is a U.S. law enacted 2015. The act imposes some new limits on the bulk collection of telecommunication metadata on U.S. citizens by American intelligence agencies. It also restores authorization for roving wiretaps and tracking lone wolf terrorists. It refers to Uniting and Strengthening America by Fulfilling Rights and Ending Eavesdropping, Dragnet-collection and Online Monitoring Act (USA FREEDOM Act).
This act treats surveillance of the content of communications (what you say on a phone call, what you write in an email) differently from data about the “when/where/to whom” of those communications.
In my opinion this has not restricted the civil liberties. The basic purpose of this act is to provide safety and security to the individuals and also to protect large amounts of data from being misused by the terrorists. Any country’s legislation must provide each and every individual with an environment which is safe and allows people to live, strive and thrive in a safe and secure environment. This act is doing the same. Coming under surveillance and being monitored does not limit the civil liberties if the safety of large number of persons is at stake. Thus, in my opinion this has not restricted the liberty yet it has given more power to the individuals.
