-Identify a case of resilience in an adolescent. Explain why this case represents an example of resilience. In the explanation, describe the adversity (or risks) experienced and the indicators that the person “bounced back despite the odds.”
-Analyze the factors from three protective areas that contributed to the occurrence of resilience for this person.
-Discuss how your case illustrates that resilience varies by context, as explained by Fergus and Zimmerman (2005).
Resilience means being able to function competently in adverse or stressful situations. An adolescent who is resilient is likely to enter adulthood with more problem solving attitude, these individuals are able to cope with most of the stressful situations easily.
Take the example of adolescents growing up in poverty. Such individuals are at a risk of numerous negative outcomes such as,poor academic achievement and violent behaviors. Researchers working under resilience frame have found that despite of adolescents growing up in poverty they develop positive outcomes. These individuals possess high level of self esteem which helps them overcome negative aspects of poverty. Hence, they bounce back despite the odds!
