Evidence suggests that married people have a better chance of surviving cancer than do singles means that the unmarried might be good targets for cancer-prevention programs. The null hypothesis in the given case is that there is no significant reltionship between the marital status and being cured of cancer. The alternative hypothesis would be that there is a significant relationship between the marital status of a person and the likelihood of surviving cancer. The independent variable in this case would be the marital status, i.e. whether a person is married or unmarried and the dependent variable would be the cancer survivors. Also, this could help in testing the cancer prevention programs by using it as the independent variable.
